Updates/Progress Report on Tasks Delegated to Sub-Committee Members

  • Commissioner L.C. Jones has made several attempts to contact Dr. Katz, Dept. of Public Health and Chancellor Griffin, CCSF Culinary Arts, to try and schedule meetings and was successful. She will be meeting with Dr. Katz on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 10:00 AM and with Chancellor Griffin on Monday, March 1, 2010. After Commissioner L.C. Jones has met with them, she will report the outcome. She will also be following-up with Sophie Maxwell regarding the re-routing the muni bus. Sub-committee members suggested that the street only be closed to cars and keep all of the activities to one side.

  • Letter to potential contributors has been done. Commissioner L.C. Jones has spoken to four businesses on Third Street regarding the needs for the health fair. She will send out additional letters to last year s contributors. Additional letters will also be sent to potential sponsors by sub-committee members following today s meeting.

  • Herb Dang will ask Greg Suhr, SF Police Department, to attend the next meeting to discuss the capacity in which the police department will be involved in the health fair.

  • Tony Caruso has agreed to decorate the auditorium the same as last year s fair (jungle theme), set-up garden model displays and potted plant displays as well as and introduce a new trend that is taking place in the health and garden industry. He will also send out letters to potential contributors.

  • Megan Blanton was not in attendance however, she did send a report which stated that she would be continuing to work with the students on developing healthy eating habits. In April, she also plans to focus all of her lesson around topics related to the health fair. She plans to be in to attend the next meeting on Thursday, March 18, 2010.

  • Dr. Toye Moses contacted the Bayview newspaper/Sun Reporter and they have agreed to publish an ad regarding the health fair. A press release will be sent to both the Bayview newspaper and Sun Reporter. Dr. Moses has spoken to Kaiser and they have agreed to help given that they receive the logistics. He has also spoken to Walgreens who has agreed to participate in the health fair and provide blood pressure tests. It is still unclear if USCF will participate but Dr. Moses will follow-up with them.
  • Sam Murray was not in attendance however, Herb Dang reported that Sam is working with Catherine Snead from the Garden Project. Herb will follow-up.

The School s Involvement with the Students Concerning the Art Projects for the Health Fair

  • Students from all schools will create posters that will decorate the hall and be hung in the auditorium. Students grades 4th and above will write essays that will be displayed next to their artwork. Ms. Alderete will be responsible for coordinating volunteers to help pick up art work from various schools and display them in the halls and auditorium.

Ideas for Physical Activities

  • Tamara Jones, SFPUC, mentioned that at least year s health fair there were Tai Chi and Yoga demonstrations and offered to make arrangements to have those demonstrations be done again at this year s fair as well.

  • Henry Calhoun, SEC, suggested a community walk from various school locations to the health fair but it was decided that it would probably be too difficult to arrange given the time constraints of the health fair.

  • Sue Weaver, SFUSD, suggested that materials be provided to the health fair attendees which plot out various trails that families can walk on their own during the course of the health fair.

Ideas to Get Students and Community to Attend the Health Fair

  • Incentives for students who attend, i.e., free dress passes, homework pass, etc.
  • Great prizes for raffle drawings, including a grand prize such as a bike or a Wii gaming system.
  • Performances by the students to get the parents to come out
  • Advertise in advance with fliers, banners, posters, etc.
  • Outreach through the churches in the community. Commissioner L.C. Jones will contact Pastor Byrd and Father Don about getting the word out.
  • Herb Dang will speak and provide fliers to the Bayview Merchants Rotary Club

Budget

  • Dr. Toye Moses reported that based on last year s budget, a total of $1500.00 was donated and the rest of the donations were in-kind donations. Heidi Harden has suggested that more than $1500.00 in monetary donations needs to be raised for the year s health fair.
