Violence Prevention Director

Maya Dillard Smith has worked in government for more than a decade. She was appointed Director of Violence Prevention by Mayor Newsom inJanuary 2008. She is also chairperson of the Violence Prevention andPublic Safety (Measure Y) Oversight Committee for the City ofOaklandwhere she spearheads the implementation of Oakland’s first evercitywide violence prevention initiative, oversees the expenditure of a10-year, $200 million investment in community policing and violenceprevention programs, and ensures accountability and effectiveness offunded strategies.  In addition to her work inviolence prevention and public safety, Ms. Dillard Smith is anappointed member on a state commission responsible for investigatingcomplaints of judicial misconduct and judicial incapacity and fordisciplining California’s 1200 judges, pursuant to article VI, section18 of the California Constitution.  Her priorexperience includes work as a private management consultant in theareas of strategic planning, organizational development, andperformance-based benchmarking and she has held coveted positions withthe California Judicial Council, U.S. Representative Barbara Lee, theU.S. Census Monitoring Board, and the National Bureau of EconomicResearch. Ms. Dillard Smith has served on local boards and commissionsincluding the Center for Young Women's Development (CYWD), a SanFrancisco based nonprofit organization working to reduce recidivism,violence and other forms of abuse and exploitation among young womenand girls.  Ms. Dillard Smith was a teen mom whoreceived a Bachelors of Arts in Public Policy and Economics from UCBerkeley and Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University,John F. Kennedy School of Government.
