Minutes of April 2, 2001 Meeting of The Commission
The meeting was called to order by President Charles
Coolidge. (Secretary Wallace Levin was unable to
attend).
Commissioners Veronika Cauley, Renie Champagne,
Carla
Hollis, Jim Lineberger, Elizabeth Melnik, CJ
O’Mara,
Michael Thompson, Edwin Wilkerson, Jim Grier, George
Gibbs, and Arthur Hoffman were present. Also present
were Arch Wilson (Former Commissioner), Wayne
Snodgrass (City Attorney), Cheryl Cook (S.F. County
Veterans Service Office) and Merylin Wong (Historic
Ships Memorial USS Iowa), and Bill stephens
(Historic
Ships - Iowa).
President Charles Coolidge led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Discussion & possible action concerning Commission
support for current legislation. Charles Coolidge
made
a motion, seconded be Veronika Cauley, to approve
the
agenda. Motion passed unanimously.
CJ O’Mara made a motion, seconded by Carla Hollis
to update and approve the minutes of the March 5,
2001
meeting to be put on the website. Motion passed
unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Arch Wilson has the Congressional Medal of Honor/On
the Wings of Valor.
Reports
RESOURCE FAIRE
Cheryl Cook reported that the Resource Faire
Committee meets every month. The next meeting will
be
on April 9th, Monday at 25 Van Ness Avenue. There
are
now 37 participants and Edwin Wilkerson and CJ
O’Mara
attend the Meetings. The attendees of the Resource
Faire are the Social Security Administration, DMV,
Dept. of Human Services, SF BAr Association, IRS, SF
Police Dept., Aids Foundation, VA Medical Center,
EDD,
to name a few.
COMMISSION BUDGET
Committee Chairman Edwin Wilkerson reported that the
Office of the Mayor, had given the Commission funds
to buy cards for all members of the Commission. He
urged all members of the Commission to get the
proper
information required, so that the cards could be
ordered.
LEGISLATIVE
A new Legislative Committee was formed, mad up of
Renie Champagne, Elizabeth Melnik and CJ O’Mara.
Cheryl Cook will give the committee her support.
Wallace Levin reported that a federal appeals court
has ruled that the government owes free lifetime
medical care to certain veterans of World War II and
the Korean War because recruiters promised them such
care if they served in the armed forces for a
minimum of 20 years.
USS IOWA
William Stephens and Merylin Wong, Directors of
Historic Ships Memorial at Pacific Square, both were
present to discuss the upcoming ceremony and dinner
for the USS Iowa. Merylin Wong passed out the April
19th Dinner Invitations to be held at the Empress of China on Pier 35. The
ship will then proceed to
move
out on April 20th 2001 Friday.
VETERANS BUILDING
Arch Wilson will attend the Building Committe
meeting
held on April 4, 2001 at 2:00pm in the Trustees
Conference Room 5th floor. This meeting is
regarding
permanent banners and the use of offices in the
Memorial Building.
WEBSITE
Webmaster CJ O’Mara reported that she has added a
new staus bar and community forum page to the
website.
Carla Hollis will be putting the
minutes into electronic format for CJ O’Mara to put on the website.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Cheryl Cook will handle the business cards and as
was
discussed with the gold seal embossed on each one.
NEW BUSINESS
Linda Holloman discussed a Woman Veteran not being
given her right of property tax deduction stemming
from a 90% disabilty bill.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Veronika Cauley for Grand Marshall in Gay Pride
Parade.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned in memory of the 21
members
of the National Gaurd, that died in that tragic air
crash.
