MINUTES - August 7, 2000, Meeting of the Commission, Room 104

1. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 1832 hours.

2. ROLL CALL: Charles Coolidge, George Gibbs, Leonard Grube,Wallace Levin, Jim Lineberger, Elizabeth Melnick,Glenn Raswyck, Edwin Wilkerson and a quorum was present. Also present as members of the public and guests were Michael Thompson, Ralph E. Gibson, Sr., Merylin Wong and Bell Stephens; both of the USS IOWA Historic Ships Memorial at Pacific Square, Cheryl D. Cook, VSO, and Mr. Wayne Snodgrass, Deputy City Attorney.

3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: All.

4. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: The agenda was approved unanimously with a hand vote.

5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF JUN 5, 2000 The minutes were approved unanimously with a hand vote. (There was no July meeting)

6. PUBLIC COMMENT: Prior to the meeting which had to be delayed n order to have a quorum present, Merylin Wong and Bell Stephens gave a passionate presentation of the status of the USS IOWA project. Cheryl Cook’s remarks and presentation were deferred to the place in the agenda for the relevant topics.

7. REPORTS: A. The structure of the Legislative Committee and composition seemed to be in need of review. The matter was placed on the agenda for our next meeting.

    B. Resource Fair. This continuing item was the subject o remarks by Cheryl Cook, whose office I a cosponsor and involved in the planning. It was observed that this is not a "Jobs Fair", but rather Resource fair. It is also misleading to call it the VEC Resource Fair, as VEC is merely one of several cosponsors.
    Service organizations: Society Security, Public Health, Library ,etc. as well as other groups are invited to have representation.

8. NEW BUSINESS Commissioner Lineberger raised the issue of staffing levels at Fort Miley. The item was placed on the agenda for the next meeting, along with the composition of the Legislative Committee.

9. ANNOUNCEMENTS Congress has passed legislation authorizing a ribbon issued by the Republic of Korea in addition to the U.S. Korean Service Ribbon.

10. To accommodate the holiday calendar, it was moved and voted to meet on Monday, September 11, 2000, 1800 hours.

The meeting was adjourned at 2015 hours.
