IV.              Planning For April 4, 2009 Health Fair:

The minutes from the December 9, 2008 Health and Housing Ad-Hoc Committee meeting were provided and read aloud by Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary.

Ms. Kathryn Summers provided an overview of the Health Summit unveiled by the National Council of Negro Women.  Ms. Summers advised the Health Summit was to be sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation and NIH (National Institute of Health).

Ms. Summers suggested implementing ideas from the Health Summit for the Health Fair.

Chair Kennedy acknowledged obesity was a problem in the community and could be addressed by the Health Summit through the Health Fair.

Chair Kennedy asked if a keynote speaker had been found.

Toye Moses, Executive Director reported he had contacted the schools and had received no response.

Ms. Alderetti advised it was hard to contact the principals and suggested forwarding a letter or requesting some time to meet after school hours.

Ms. Alderetti noted last year the schools were involved because of the participation of Narda Harrigan and Sue Weaver from Brete Harte Elementary School and because of their participation more was not required of the principals.

Ms. Summers advised based on her current conversations with Sue Weaver, she would not be available to participate this year. Ms. Summers said she would contact her again to see if she changed her mind.

Chair Kennedy suggested contacting Mr. Carlos Garcia, Superintendant of the SF Unified School District because he might be able to send someone else.

Director Moses suggested drafting a letter for signature by Chair Kennedy to forward to Mr. Garcia.

Dr. Harrison Parker suggested the participation of a pediatrician at the Health Fair.

Director Moses advised calls had been placed to Dr. Ghaly and Dr. Burke.  He said Dr. Burke had advised she was very busy.

Chair Kennedy suggested contacting Kaiser Permanente and UC for pediatricians.

Director Moses reported contacting Heidi Hardin who was helpful last year and was again available to provide help with donations through her non-profit organization.

Director Moses said he needed specific dates for Willie Moses, UC 2nd year medical student.

Chair Kennedy suggested Commissioner Jones continue her contact with Mr. Willie Moses.

Dr. Parker suggested Chair Kennedy contact Commissioner Jones regarding her availability to participate.

Chair Kennedy suggested contacting the 49er’s, Lennar, and The Kellogg Foundation.

The Health and Housing Ad-Hoc committee decided Ms. Summers and Mr. Sam Murray would share the duties of co-coordinator for the event.

Ms. Summers offered to contact pediatricians.

Chair Kennedy asked all present to think about potential keynote speakers from the health industry.

Chair Kennedy asked Commissioner Chung to work with Commissioner Jones regarding the planning of sub-committees.

Mr. Sam Murray agreed to Chair the committee responsible for Incentives.

Ms. Alderetti advised she volunteered to Chair the Set-Up committee.

Chair Kennedy requested staff to contact Ms. Jones and get a copy of the original Planning Subcommittees list.

Ms. Summers advised Mr. Jeffrey Betcher of the Quesada Gardens, Inc. previously chaired the Publicity/Media committee.

It was noted the flyers last year were created by Sam Murray and Jeffrey Betcher.

Chair Kennedy suggested contacting everyone who worked on the Health Fair event last year and asking them to return for the April 4, 2009 event.

Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary read a letter from Tamra Jones advising she would be available to Chair the committee responsible for Physical/Work-out Activities.

Dr. Harrison Parker agreed to Chair the Evaluation committee.

Chair Kennedy said Commissioner Churchwell would Chair the next meeting.

Tony Caruso of Decorative Plants advised he was on the Decoration committee.

There was much discussion regarding the time of day the Ad-Hoc Committee meeting should be held.

The members present agreed a commitment was needed from the principals to assure attendance of the children and their parents.

Sam Murray agreed to create a form which would be forwarded to the schools to insure the participation of the school families.

Tony Caruso of Decorative Plants stated a big goal of the event was to include the children in the art and debate projects.

Commissioner Kennedy said information about the art and debate projects should be included in the form forwarded to the schools.

Ms. Alderetti said an essay topic was suggested for the 3rd and 4th graders, for example: “Three Healthy Choices You Can Make to Improve Your Health”.

Ms. Alderetti said it was suggested the younger children

create a picture of a positive health choice, for example: “Playing Outside Instead Of Watching TV”.

Ms. Alderetti said this would make more sense than a debate topic because it would be hard to debate the pros and cons of being healthy.  However, it was agreed that Mr. Russ would be contacted to see if he had a debate topic for the older students,

or if the idea of essays would be better.

Director Moses asked Ms. Alderetti what the committee could do to help.

Ms. Alderetti said contacting the principals by email and using the school mail and letting them get involved that way would be more effective because it was hard to get committee meeting/attendance and more people want be involved and through this method they could.

Chair Kennedy said she would like to get Lennar Corporation and the 49er’s involved along with the banks in the area.

Sonya Merritt of Union Bank agreed to participate and Chair Kennedy said letters should be sent to all of the banks in the area.

Director Moses said money would be available from the SFPUC.

Tony Caruso of Decorative Plants suggested contacting Kathryn Sneed of the Garden Project who had been very helpful at the previous Health Fair.

Ms. Alderetti suggested contacting the school nurses and health advocates.  She said each school has a school nurse or health advocate.

Chair Kennedy requested all Planning Committee Chairs bring reports to the next meeting.
