Mayor Lee’s Statement on Supervisors’ Proposal to Dismantle Care Not Cash
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement about Board of Supervisors’ proposal to dismantle Care Not Cash:
“Care Not Cash is premised on providing a path to housing and services. That path begins with shelter for those who need it. By removing the shelter system from the available benefits provided to Care Not Cash recipients, we dismantle this path to getting people housed, ultimately undermining the success of this nationally recognized, award-winning program. More than 3,400 formerly homeless people have gotten into stable living situations because of Care Not Cash and the shelters, supportive services, and housing for which it pays.
In the last seven years, San Francisco moved in a new direction in its efforts to end homelessness, helping thousands of people get off the streets and into supportive housing and services.
Care Not Cash has changed the lives of thousands of people on the streets of San Francisco and is continuing to make real progress in helping people and combating chronic homelessness.”
