Mayor Lee’s Statement on President Obama Ordering End of Defense of Marriage Act

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on President Barack Obama’s order to the U.S. Department of Justice to stop its defense of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal statute that bars recognition of same-sex marriages:

“I applaud President Obama for his action today on recognizing the unconstitutionality of DOMA and bringing us one step closer in advancing the civil rights movement. This is a good day for marriage equality and the LGBT community. What started over seven years ago with then Mayor Gavin Newsom has grown to become one of the most important civil rights issues of our generation, and San Francisco remains committed in this fight and the pursuit of equality for all.”
