Mayor Lee’s Statement on Passing of Elouise Westbrook

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the passing of legendary civil rights leader Elouise Westbrook, former President of the San Francisco Housing Authority Commission and activist for the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood and the African-American community in San Francisco:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing this morning of a dear friend, Elouise Westbrook, a truly inspirational woman who has left a legacy of advocacy and activism for affordable housing and healthcare for the poor. Her message was heard from City Hall to the halls of Congress.

Elouise worked tirelessly to bring quality health care services to all residents throughout our City. This last June, I had the privilege and honor to cut the ribbon and dedicate the Westbrook Plaza Health Center and Housing Complex in the South of Market neighborhood, a redevelopment project with the South of Market Health Center and Mercy Housing California with 49 units of affordable family housing and a 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art community health clinic for many low-income residents of our City. Given her tireless commitment to serving our most vulnerable residents, this was truly a fitting tribute to Elouise. Her work and now legacy will continue to inspire civic and community leaders, both young and old.

Her commitment to community service is deeply rooted and felt throughout our City, and she will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Elouise’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.”
