Mayor Lee's Statement on Independence Day

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on celebrating America’s Independence Day:

“On this day, we celebrate our country’s independence and give thanks for the freedom and liberties for all Americans that our founding fathers and the generations before us have fought for.

Independence Day is also the perfect opportunity to renew our push for a future that is independent of foreign oil and to take the steps necessary for a greener future. San Francisco is on the right track and we are building upon the foundation created by the innovative sustainability policies started by former Mayor Gavin Newsom. In 2008, Mayor Newsom, along with the mayors of San Jose and Oakland, established a joint policy to make the Bay Area the electric vehicle (EV) capital of the nation, and at the U.S. Conference of Mayors last month, I urged every city to join us in committing to making the U.S. the EV capital of the world. I am excited to showcase electric vehicles in San Francisco, and have announced that I will be traveling as part of my Mayoral duties in a plug-in hybrid electric Chevrolet Volt – the most fuel-efficient compact car sold in the U.S. as rated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – and have installed EV charging infrastructure in City Hall. I will also be traveling to nearby events and meetings by bicycle and public transit to promote our City’s Transit First policies.

I am excited to do my part to promote our nation’s independence from oil, and I hope you will all join me in jumpstarting the green economy, eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels, eliminating a significant portion of our CO2 emissions, and ensuring our sustainable future on this Independence Day.”
