Mayor Lee's Statement on Death of Second SFFD Firefighter

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the death of San Francisco firefighter Anthony Valerio who responded to a two-alarm fire on Berkeley Way in the Diamond Heights neighborhood:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of two of our veteran SFFD firefighters who died in the line of duty – Lieutenant Vincent Perez and now Firefighter Anthony Valerio. These two men have dedicated their lives to protecting the people of San Francisco for decades. This is a terrible tragedy for our City and it is a reminder to us all of the sacrifice that firefighters make along with their family and friends. We are forever appreciative for the brave men and women of the San Francisco Fire Department who put their lives on the line every day for us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the Perez and Valerio families as well as the San Francisco Fire Department who are mourning this terrible loss.”

In honor of heroes Lieutenant Vincent Perez and Firefighter Anthony Valerio, Mayor Lee has ordered all flags to remain at half-staff at all City buildings and grounds until further notice.
