Mayor Lee Kicks off 30th Anniversary of Fleet Week
San Francisco Fleet Week 2011 Celebrates Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Response
10/5/11—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today welcomed the arrival of the US Navy Blue Angels to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of San Francisco Fleet Week and announced the lineup for San Francisco Fleet Week 2011. Focused on emergency preparedness, this year’s event also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of naval aviation, a historic event which started here in San Francisco Bay with the first-ever launch of a plane aboard the deck of the USS Pennsylvania in 1911.
“Fleet Week is a San Francisco tradition and we take this opportunity to salute the men and women in uniform everywhere for their devotion and service to our country,” said Mayor Lee. “During this year’s 30th Anniversary of Fleet Week in San Francisco we embrace our shared mission of teaching all citizens and first responders how to get better prepared for the next emergency.”
“Last year I was charged with putting the fleet back into Fleet Week and sharing the military’s well proven expertise in humanitarian assistance and disaster response with the citizenry of San Francisco,” said San Francisco Fleet Week Chairman Major General Michael J. Myatt (United States Marine Corps, Retired). “I am humbled by the enthusiastic response we have received from San Francisco’s citizens and elected officials to our message. Truly, we are all in this together.”
San Francisco and Fleet Week share a long and storied history that originated in 1908 with the arrival of the “Great White Fleet” to the Bay during their round-the-world 14-month long voyage. Over the years, millions more San Franciscans have welcomed the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard making this Fleet Week one of the City’s most treasured traditions. In 1981, under the leadership of Mayor Dianne Feinstein, the modern Fleet Week tradition began by honoring the dedicated men and women of the sea services.
San Francisco Fleet Week is now the venue for Bay Area First Responders and the U.S. Military to meet, train and share the latest lessons learned from recent Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response operations. These activities help raise awareness and better equip the Bay Area to respond and recover from disasters.
This year’s Fleet Week Parade of Ships will include the following US Navy vessels USS Carl Vinson, USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Antietam, USS Milius, USS Chief and USS Guadalupe, US Coast Guard ships USCG Bertholf and USCG Alert, Canadian Naval vessels HMCS Ottawa, HMCS Saskatoon, HMCS Nanaimo and HMCS Brandon and the historic WWII Liberty Ship Jeremiah O’Brien.
