Mayor Lee Announces Social Gaming Company Kabam Moving to Downtown SF
Growing Social Game Developer Signs Lease for 25,000 Square Feet Office, Creates 150 New Jobs
03/02/11—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that Kabam, a developer of online social games, signed a lease for a new 25,000 square foot office space in the heart of downtown San Francisco. The new space is in the Orrick Building at 405 Howard Street, near San Francisco’s major transit hubs and steps away from the future Transbay Terminal, and provides Kabam’s rapidly growing studio development teams with a creative space in a vibrant technology hub. Kabam plans to add 150 jobs to this location in San Francisco, adding to the 30 employees already located in San Francisco.
“Kabam’s new San Francisco studio office space reinforces what we already know – that San Francisco is the ideal location for tech companies looking to hire the world’s best technical and creative talent,” said Mayor Lee. “I’m proud to lead a city where cutting edge technology that fundamentally alters the way that we work, play and communicate is developed every day.”
“Kabam’s new San Francisco studio office in a state of the art building provides the top-notch work environment we seek for our employees as we continue our exciting growth,” said Kevin Chou, CEO of Kabam. “We want to draw further from the incredible talent pool for game development in the San Francisco area, and this studio, which is easily accessible from anywhere in the Bay Area, is central to that important effort.”
The relocated and expanded Kabam San Francisco studio will work on new game development and is currently hiring engineers, producers, artists and marketing personnel at the San Francisco studio to expand its slate of titles. While Kabam brings 150 new high tech jobs to San Francisco in the near term, plans call for an increase in company-wide job count to over 750 employees over the next year. One-third to half of these positions could be in San Francisco. Kabam as a company has expanded from 25 employees at the beginning of 2010, to over 275 today, with additional studios in Redwood City and China.
Kabam’s move further strengthens San Francisco’s role as a center for the gaming industry. This week, San Francisco hosts the 25th annual Game Developer’s Conference at Moscone Center with over 18,000 attendees from around the world. Home to well over 500 technology firms, over 10 technology-focused business incubators and accelerators and a robust investment community, San Francisco continues to distinguish itself as an international hub for technology and innovation.
