Mayor Lee Announces Recipients Of 2012 Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award
Principal of the Year Awards Recognize Dedicated Principals for Commitment to Youth
6/1/12–Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced the winners of the Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award recognizing the work of four outstanding public school principals for the 2011-2012 School Year:
· Alan V. Broussard, Executive Director, Early Education Department
· Carol L. Fong, Principal, Ulloa Elementary School
· James S. Dierke, Principal, Visitacion Valley Middle School
· Andrew W. Ishibashi, Principal, Lowell High School
“These principals have demonstrated outstanding leadership and a passion for delivering quality education to our young people,” said Mayor Lee.
“I want to thank the Mayor for recognizing our principals. Being a principal is a tremendously challenging and important job,” said SFUSD Superintendent Carlos Garcia. “Principals not only need to be instructional leaders, they also need to be ambassadors to diverse communities, entrepreneurs that can find additional resources, and team leaders of children and adults.”
The Mayor’s Principal of the Year Program began in 2007 and is a collaborative project between the City, the School District and the United Administrators of San Francisco. These awards recognize the outstanding San Francisco public school principals for their dedication, professionalism, and work on behalf of the City’s young people. Recipients of the Mayor’s Award are nominated by parents, youth, educators, administrators and other community members for excellence in their classroom, their school and their City.
Each principal will receive a monetary award, a gift from Tiffany & Co. and gifts from the California Academy of Sciences, the de Young Museum, SFMOMA, Beach Blanket Babylon Gap, Chevron, Hilton, and Pier 39.
Principals were nominated and selected based on three primary criteria: promoting equity and access, promoting student achievement, and promoting accountability. The nomination and selection process for the Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award occurs yearly. Nominations are accepted throughout the year.
