Announcement Marks the Fourth Annual Principal of the Year Award Program
05/23/11—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced the winners of the 2011 Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award recognizing the work of three outstanding public school principals for the 2010-2011 School Year:
· JoLynn Washington of Jose Ortega Elementary School;
· David Wong of Francis Scott Key Elementary School; and
· Jim Fithian of Court Community Schools.
“San Francisco’s families deserve great schools and I salute the outstanding work that is done every day by our public school principals who deliver a quality education to all of our children,” said Mayor Lee. “We all win when our youth is prepared for their future.”
First established for the 2007-08 School Year, the Mayor’s Principal of the Year Program is a collaborative project by the City and County of San Francisco and the San Francisco Unified School District. These awards recognize the outstanding San Francisco public school principals for their dedication, professionalism, and work on behalf of the City’s young people. Recipients of the Mayor’s Award are nominated by parents, youth, educators, administrators, and other community members for excellence in their classroom, their school, and their City.
Each principal will receive a check, an award from Tiffany & Co. and gifts and contributions from San Francisco institutions including the California Academy of Sciences, the de Young Museum and Beach Blanket Babylon and from local businesses including merchants from Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, La Boulange, and Paxti Pizza. Between the three principals, they will also receive SF Giants game packages, SF Opera tickets and an Apple MacBook Pro.
This special leadership recognition is a collaborative effort with the Mayor’s Office, San Francisco Unified School District, and the United Administrators of San Francisco. Principals were nominated and selected based on three primary criteria: promoting equity and access, promoting student achievement, and promoting accountability. The nomination and selection process for the Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award occurs yearly. Nominations are accepted throughout the year. For more information, go to: www.sfmayor.org/education.
