Mayor Lee Announces Half Percent Drop in San Francisco’s Unemployment

10/21/11— Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that San Francisco’s unemployment rate dropped another 0.5 percent, based on preliminary September unemployment numbers released by the State Employment Development Department (EDD).

Dropping from 8.8 percent in August to an 8.3 percent in September keeps a consistent downward trend in unemployment rates in the City and leaves San Francisco as the county with the third lowest rate of unemployment among the State’s 58 counties.

“Today’s unemployment report shows that the City’s tireless efforts to support job creation and drive economic growth such as in the technology, innovation, and small business sectors are working,” said Mayor Lee. “Even in these tough economic times, San Francisco is competing and winning. However, the number of San Franciscans looking for a job remains unacceptably high and we must continue policies that encourage job growth and ensure our residents are ready to work.”

The most significant job growth was in professional and business services, which gained 2,200 jobs across the three-county San Francisco Metropolitan Division. Other growing sectors include educational services and government, which combined, accounted for an additional 3,200 jobs. Construction also outperformed a 21-year average, adding 200 jobs in September, a month that historically has see no increase in jobs.

In September, there were 2,400 less unemployed San Franciscans than in August. This September’s unemployment rate is down significantly from last September’s unemployment rate of 9.3 percent.
