Mayor Lee’s Statement on Great California Shakeout Earthquake Drill
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement after participating this morning in the Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill with school children from Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary and the 8.6 million Californians who joined in the statewide exercise:
“The question is when, not if, there will be a major earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area. Emergency preparedness drills like the Great California ShakeOut will help save lives in the next disaster. The safest thing to do during an earthquake is to drop, cover and hold on.
Today’s 3.9 earthquake centered near Berkeley on the Hayward Fault is another reminder that we have to be prepared. Thankfully there currently are no reports of damage in the City.
Even with all the progress San Francisco is making to seismically upgrade our hospitals, our water system and our critical infrastructure, every single family should be prepared for the next major earthquake. I urge all Bay Area residents to visit www.72hours.org to make an emergency plan and build a disaster supply kit to best prepare themselves and their families for an earthquake.”
