Mayor Lee’s Statement on Earth Day
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on Earth Day 2011:
“This Earth Day, I’d like to thank all of San Francisco’s residents, businesses and City employees for your dedication to making San Francisco a leader in environmental protection and sustainability. San Francisco leads the way in environmental stewardship, with the highest rate of recycling and composting in the country, the most effective green building standards, and the most aggressive programs that promote clean energy technologies.
As a City, we are showing the nation that you can help your local economy recover by acting responsibly and promoting a clean energy economy. This week we launched some new initiatives that will further San Francisco’s environmental goals, including putting in place the nation’s most forward-thinking law to allow for “urban agriculture” in all areas of the City, announcing new legislation to require all City buildings to achieve LEED Gold standards, and launching our innovative SFpark to reduce congestion and carbon emissions.
We can do many things in our homes and businesses to further improve the environment. Reduce waste, recycle, compost, use energy and water as efficiently as possible, and walk, bike or take public transit whenever possible. Thank you for your cooperation on these efforts. Together we can meet our goals and continue to lead the nation with our environmental achievements while promoting a green economy.”
