Mayor Edwin M. Lee & Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin Make Friendly Mayoral Wager on Cal Bears-Fresno State Bulldogs Football Game

Mayors Wager for the Best Foods & Drinks of San Francisco & Fresno on Cal-Fresno Game

8/31/11–Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin today agreed to a friendly wager on the 2011 college football season opening game between the University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears and the California State University at Fresno Bulldogs in the TicketCity Battle by the Bay on Saturday, being played at Candlestick Park. Mayors Lee and Swearengin will both attend the game and participate in the on the field coin toss.

Mayors Lee and Swearengin agreed that the office of the winning team’s mayor will receive a package of the losing city mayor’s best treats and drinks. If the Cal Bears win, Mayor Swearengin will send Fresno State wine and other Fresno State products such as olive oil, nuts, fruits and vegetables. If the Fresno State Bulldogs win, Mayor Lee will send Dungeness crab from Fisherman’s Wharf, Anchor Steam beer, Ghirardelli chocolates and Philz coffee.

“Like all proud Cal alumni, I’ll be rooting for the Bears to defeat the Bulldogs in an exciting game this Saturday,” said Mayor Lee. “I’ll proudly enjoy Fresno’s best treats and drinks when we win our friendly bet with Mayor Swearengin. Go Bears!”

“Everyone knows that Fresno State and the Fresno area are home to the world’s best food products,” said Mayor Swearengin. “We enjoy that bounty on a daily basis , but nothing will top the sweet taste of victory we’re going to experience Saturday when the Fresno State Bulldogs beat the Cal Bears. I’m looking forward to winning the bet with Mayor Lee and feasting on some of the finest food and drink that San Francisco has to offer.”

Cal plays against Fresno State in the neutral-site game at Candlestick Park on Saturday, September 3. Kick off will begin at 4:07 p.m. The game is the first regular-season college football game to ever be played at Candlestick Park. The Golden Bears and Bulldogs have met only twice in their history. After playing the last 88 seasons and every home game at Memorial Stadium since the 1923 Big Game, Cal will host its home games outside of Berkeley for the first time in 2011 while Memorial Stadium undergoes an extensive renovation and retrofit. The rest of Cal’s 2011 home games will be played at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.
