Mayor Edwin Lee’s Statement on Local Hire

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the first effective date of the Local Hire law, an amendment to Chapter 6.22(G) of the San Francisco Administrative Code that requires contractors performing City public works or improvement projects to meet mandatory levels of San Francisco resident participation:

“Beginning today, Local Hire requirements will be included in construction contracts issued by the City and County of San Francisco. It is estimated that Local Hire will generate up to 355 new jobs for San Franciscans every year once it is fully phased-in. Local Hire is a reinvestment in our City and will put families back to work.

I applaud the Board of Supervisors for bringing this legislation forward so we can now begin implementation.  I want to thank the City Administrator’s Office, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the City Attorney’s Office, SF Public Utilities Commission, Department of Public Works, the Recreation and Park Department, SF Airport, SF Port, SF Municipal Transportation Agency, the Human Rights Commission, Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement and the Controller’s Office for developing the Local Hire Implementation Plan which provides a roadmap to help guide City departments, contractors and the broader community to ensure that the City’s local hiring ordinance is achievable, flexible and will succeed in boosting San Francisco’s economy and provide jobs for residents. We will continue to invest in San Francisco jobs and do what we can to ensure that qualified San Francisco residents have the opportunity to get to work building their own communities.”
