Mayor Edwin Lee’s Statement on César Chávez Birthday
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement to commemorate Cesar Chavez’s Birthday:
“On this day, what would have been his 84th birthday, we remember Cesar Chavez and his legacy that lives with us every day. As an educator, environmentalist, social activist, and as a civil rights leader who fought for fair treatment and fair wages for farm workers, we continue to find strength and learn from what Cesar Chavez accomplished.
Cesar Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers and brought together hundreds of thousands of people and ensured that they were provided better working conditions and the chance to live a better life. Through his courage, Cesar Chavez taught us that together their voices could be heard, loudly and clearly.
Cesar Chavez’s vision, leadership, and commitment for fair treatment for all workers has been instrumental in teaching us about the responsibilities we have as citizens in our City’s multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society. We honor him today for making society stronger for everyone. Sí Se Puede!”
