Mission Statement
The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice’s mission is to enhance community safety and strengthen the juvenile and criminal justice system through public policy development and though collaborative partnerships with city agencies, community-based organizations, federal and state funding agencies, and San Francisco residents.
Description of program areas, operational functions
MOCJ engages in activities that fall into four program areas:
- Violence Prevention Planning: MOCJ is engaged in a strategic planning initiative to develop a 3 to 5 year, citywide plan for violence prevention. The Planning Team facilitating this effort includes MOCJ staff, UCSF Dr. Howard Pinderhughes, and experts from the Violence Prevention Institute. A Leadership Council of more than 25 department directors from numerous City agencies and community leaders is overseeing the process and a Working Group of more than 25 experts from numerous City agencies and community groups is developing the plan. The Planning Team is also conducting numerous focus groups throughout San Francisco. The plan is set to be completed by the end of summer 2007, with implementation of the plan following immediately thereafter.
- Community Programs and Community Partnerships: All grants formerly managed by MOCJ are now administered through MOCI.
- Collaborations and Innovations in Criminal Justice: MOCJ facilitates collaboration among city agencies to develop crime reduction strategies that are aligned with best practices in public safety. MOCJ pursues federal and state funds and shares these funds with other agencies for the creation of projects that enhance collaborative and innovative strategies across agencies. MOCJ works with other agencies to develop programs that respond to high priority issues and/or allow for new creative strategies to handle persistent public safety problems.
- Research and Policy Development: MOCJ conducts data analysis and policy research and development to share critical information on criminal and juvenile justice issues and to promote best practices in public safety. With a new Data Analyst on staff, we will respond to data and information requests on crime and criminal justice, develop periodic reports that provide updates on crime trends and program impacts, and develop policy proposals.
