Heather Fong
Chief of Police
San Francisco Police Department
850 Bryant #525
San Francisco, California 94103

Dear Chief Fong:

We, the members of the Animal Control and Welfare Commission, are writing to you to applaud your enforcement of the fireworks laws in San Francisco and the seizing of many illegal fireworks. This Fourth of July we urge you to continue this work of decreasing the number of illegal fireworks in San Francisco.

Fireworks are not just hazardous to people and property, but also to the wildlife and domestic animals of our city. Nesting season for birds in San Francisco extends from mid-February to mid-August. Many kinds of birds are nesting during July, and if frightened by fireworks, can abandon their nests. This is particularly true in our parks and natural areas, but can also happen in residential areas. Cats, dogs and other animals are often terrified of fireworks.

Thanks again for all of your efforts.

                                           Respectfully submitted,

                                              Pam Hemphill MD
                                                  Commissioner
