Items are first introduced to the Commission then there is public comment. After public comment, the Commission discusses the item and then may vote on it.

[Action Item]

Action to send a letter to the Board of Supervisors urging them to hold hearings about animal welfare issues at the San Francisco Zoo. The Commission will also recommend that the Board focus the hearings on the need to: 1) Make animal welfare a priority at the Zoo by guaranteeing that future expenditures are spent on meaningful improvements to conditions for animals before additional visitor amenities or new animals are brought into the Zoo; 2) Reform Zoo managements, oversight, and accountability through the creation of a Board-appointed “Zoo Oversight Commission” focused on ensuring animal welfare at the Zoo; and 3) Transition to a rescue zoo, in which new Zoo animals come from rescues of exotic and other species currently in inhumane private ownership or other situations (as was done with the grizzly bear cubs last summer). There is accessible parking at the following locations: two (2) designated blue curb spaces on the southwest corner of McAllister Street at Van Ness Avenue; the Performing Arts Garage (entrance on Grove Street between Franklin and Gough Streets), and at Civic Center Plaza Garage. 

 

The following services are available upon request at least two working days prior to the meeting: American Sign Language interpreters, use of a reader during a meeting, or a sound enhancement system.
