Mission & Activites

The Youth Commission is a diverse group of 17 youth from all across San Francisco between the ages of 12 and 23. Each member of the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor appoints one member to the Commission. The Mayor also appoints five additional members to ensure accurate representation. Each Commissioner is expected to have illustrated leadership in their community through involvement in grassroots efforts, school organizing, or any other advocacy for the benefit of their peers and community.

The Youth Commission is charged with gathering youth and community input through information gathering and civic engagement activities such as our YouthVote Initiative. Using input from the community, information obtained through YouthVote, and Commissioners individual experiences, the Youth Commission works to ensure that City policy supports the community's true needs through:

  • Budget advocacy to protect effective programs and efforts.
  • Monitoring of policies affecting youth.
  • Review of new proposals from the Mayor and Board of Supervisors.
  • Staying abreast on government, community, and national trends affecting young people.
