Children's
Program |
The Asian
Women's Shelter (AWS) is a comprehensive shelter program that provides safety,
food, shelter, advocacy, and other resources to assist women in rebuilding
violence-free lives for themselves and their children. Our services are
culturally appropriate and language accessible. We have an on-call pool
of multilingual advocates to respond to the wide range of Asian languages
spoken in the Bay Area, and we work closely with other agencies in the community
to provide a comprehensive network of resources for Asian battered women
and their children. The Asian Women's Shelter is committed to every person's
right to live in a violence free home and has a specific focus on addressing
the cultural and language needs of immigrant, refugee and US-born Asian
women and their children. This perspective is reflected in the three main
areas of AWS's work: direct services, community building and organizational
development. |

Western Addition
Youth Action Center |
The Booker
T. Washington Community Service Center is a multiservice center that, in
collaboration with agencies committed to the health and well-being of youth
that have an understanding of African American youth, provides educational,
recreational, multicultural and community service activities for 150 youth
between the ages of 5 and 17, who live primarily in the Western Addition
and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. The agency, with its community partners,
addresses the unique circumstances of African-American youth in a multicultural
environment and the economic and social disparities affecting the quality
of their lives. Youth enrolled in the program will sign a contract for specific
programs agreed upon with the program manager. Parents are included in the
planning and progress of their youth through individual conferences and
monthly parent meetings. |

Careers in
Science |
Careers in
Science provides a sequence of opportunities for teens and young adults
– s particularly those from groups traditionally underrepresented in the
sciences – to become involved in science education and research at the California
Academy of Sciences. It does so through year-round educational opportunities
that give participants an understanding of core concepts in science, experience
in real science research, and the opportunity to share this new knowledge
with the public on the museum floor and through outreach. Careers in Science
helps young people develop educational goals and career skills through authentic,
paid work experiences in the natural sciences. Careers in Science annually
recruits a diverse group of teens through community-based organizations
or high schools that serve low-income or at-risk populations, including
parenting teens and teens enrolled in nontraditional high schools. |
