MINUTES - October 4, 1999, Meeting of the Commission, Room 104

  1. CALL TO ORDER: The Meeting was called to order at 1819
  2. ROLL CALL: Veronika Cauley, Renie Champagne, Bob DeLaCruz, Leonard Grube, Wallace Levin, Jim Lineberger, Maceo May, Glenn Raswyck, Edwin Wilkerson; and a quorum was present. Attorney Wayne Snodgrass was also present.
  3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: All
  4. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: The agenda was approved unanimously with a hand vote.
  5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : The minutes were approved unanimously with a hand vote.
  6. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
  7. REPORTS:A. Secretary - Response to the requests for demographics from the Commission on the Status of Women was addressed. The V.A. Commission voted unanimously with a hand vote that the response would be a letter stating that the Commission was made up of 15 members of which, dictated by our charter, 3 members are women. A letter from the C. President will be sent to the CSOF stating that information.

B. Health and Welfare Committee - C. May reported on the breaking of ground by Swords to Plowshares Treasure Island Residential Program. C. May discussed the East Bay Veterans’ Stand-down, with both pro and con views of the effectiveness of these type efforts when compared to the outlay of resources. He also discussed the cuts in the Homeless Funds in the present budget negotiations at the Federal level and how it threatens existing Veterans’ Homeless Programs.

C. Legislative Committee - With a unanimous hand vote, the Commission agreed to have the President and C. Levin write and send a letter to the Arts Commission Grants Program to increase the monies for the Veterans’ Day Parade and the Mayor’s Memorial Day Observances. The letter will reflect the uniqueness of these events and ask if the Veterans’ Community can get a "special" consideration in the area of matching funds..

  1. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None.
  2. NEW BUSINESS: The Veterans’ Affairs Commission 2000 Officer’s Nominating Committee was set up and it will consist of Jim Lineberger, Maceo May and Wallace Levin.
  3. ANNIOUNCEMENTS: C. Renie Champagne announced that the Veterans’ Day Parade will be on Sunday, November 7th, 1999 and all the Commission are invited to participate.
  4. ADJOURNMENT: 1940 HRS
