San Francisco Releases Draft Report On A Potential Municipal Fiber Optic Network

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Department of Telecommunications and Information Services (DTIS), on behalf of the City and County of San Francisco today released a draft feasibility study for "fiber-to-the-premise" networking.  The study, titled "Fiber Optics for Government and Public Broadband: a feasibility study," was commissioned by Supervisor Tom Ammiano and prepared over the past six months by Columbia Telecommunications Corporation (CTC), a public interest communications engineering and consulting firm.

"I am thrilled that the study has been released and I look forward to exploring the long-term benefits of fiber to the end user," says Supervisor Tom Ammiano. "I thank the Mayor’s Office for allocating the funding for this venture."

Mayor Gavin Newsom applauded the release of the study saying, "This study is an important milestone in our effort to advance technology access for all San Franciscans. It makes clear that we cannot delay our commitment to provide free and affordable universal internet access."

CTC met with a variety of government and public stakeholders, as well as with the existing communications carriers in San Francisco, and prepared an analysis of how San Francisco can potentially enable provision of very-high speed communications services over fiber optics to meet public broadband needs -- as well as San Francisco's own internal communications needs for public safety, public health, education, and other government needs.

The study is released in draft form so that members of the public can provide comment and input.  CTC invites comment and ideas from any interested San Francisco party.  The comments will be summarized and included in the report. Email can be addressed to SFfiber@internetCTC.com.  To view the Fiber Study please log onto: www.sfgov.org/techconnect.
