Bernal Heights Banks-Chapman Update - March 16, 2007

On FOLSOM STREET

Sewer main replacement on Folsom Street is continuing and may be finished by today.  Motorists should use Prentiss Street when crews close Folsom Street for construction.  After finishing here, this sewer crew will move to Nevada Street to replace the main between Chapman and Bernal Heights Boulevard.

Trucks on Chapman StreetThe water main on the Powhattan-Chapman block was installed weeks ago; however, switching the water service to connect with the new main has not started yet and will not start until the sewer work is completed.  At this time, it looks like this may occur almost immediately after the sewer work is done.

To start the water service connection work, the subcontractor, P&J, will dig pits in front of each property to allow the Water Department crews to make the connections to the new main.  This switch-over work from the old water main to the new one should start and finish next week.  P&J crews will refill and seal these pits after the Water Department is through with the connections.

On BANKS STREET

Sewer main replacement from Powhattan to Chapman started a few weeks ago, but was stopped because of an alignment issue with the new sewer main.  This alignment issue appears to have been resolved.  Therefore, sewer work here should resume after crews finish with the sewer main replacement on Nevada Street, between Chapman and Bernal Heights Boulevard.

Water main replacement was not needed on this street; therefore, water service work was not planned for Banks Street.

On PRENTISS STREET

The sewer main replacement from Powhattan to Chapman to Bernal Heights Boulevard has been completed.  Prentiss Street between Powhattan and Chapman has been restored temporarily to allow for vehicular travel.

The water services for the Chapman-to-Bernal Heights Boulevard block have been switched over to connect with the new main.  P&J crews have refilled and resealed the pits that were dug for the connection work.

Water connection switch-over for the properties on the Powhattan-to-Chapman block will not occur until later because this work will require closing Prentiss Street.  Since the current Folsom Street sewer work requires Folsom Street to be closed, Prentiss Street must be available for traffic.  Therefore, water connection work here will not occur until Folsom Street can be kept open for traffic.

Excavation for the stairway near Bernal Heights Boulevard may be starting soon.

On NEVADA STREET

Sewer main replacement of the Chapman to Bernal Heights Boulevard has started or will be starting soon.  Trinet, the general contractor, will return to this street to continue the sewer main replacement that started with the Powhattan-to-Chapman block.

Water service connections from Powhattan to Chapman to Bernal Heights Boulevard have been completed.  P&J crews have refilled and resealed the pits that were dug for the connection work.

Excavation for Rosenkranz stairsOn ROSENKRANZ STREET

Building of the two sets of stairs near Bernal Heights Boulevard has started.  Excavations for the upper stairway began last week.

On POWHATTAN AVENUE

Sewer main replacement on Powhattan has all been completed.  Crews will still have to install some catch-basins or storm drains at various intersections, though.

Meanwhile, water service to all properties, except to the ones on the Banks-to-Folsom block has been switched over to connect with the new water main.

On CHAPMAN STREET

Sewer main replacement on Chapman has all been completed, as well.  Catch-basin installation at the Banks and at the Prentiss intersection remains.

Switching the water lines to connect with the new water main has not started on Chapman, yet.

On BERNAL HEIGHTS BOULEVARD

The Water Department has connected the new main to the existing one at the Ellsworth intersection, last week.  The pit should be refilled shortly, and paving of the trench line could start as early as next week.
