Walter Haas Playground

 Walter Haas Stairs
Walter Haas Playground is a four-acre neighborhood park located on the northeast corner of Diamond Heights Boulevard and Addison Street. The facility consisted of two separate play areas, a basketball court, a pedestrian loop path, several benches and tables and two informal lawn areas. Most of the park elements were in need of improvements or replacement, due to deterioration and deferred maintenance. The Friends of Walter Haas Playground were extremely successful in raising private funds, and hired Landscape Architect consultant Studio Green to assist DPW in preparing both preliminary park drawings and construction documents.

The renovation plan includes combining the two play areas into one large enclosed children’s play area. The new play area is situated at the base of the hillside, in approximately the same location as one of the original structures. The upper terrace has been improved with an enclosed off-leash dog run area. An ADA pathway/ramp has been installed to connect the two terraces. A portion of the hillside was excavated between the two terraces to create an amphitheater effect, which over looks the newly resurfaced and upgraded basketball court, gaining additional usable park space. Additional general park improvements include repaving the pedestrian loop, providing a new maintenance shed, pruning and clearing of over grown shrubbery for improved safety, installing new seating areas around the park, new landscaping and irrigation and improved drainage.
