Fourth Street Bridge Retrofit
The Fourth Street Bridge was originally designed in 1914 and constructed from 1916-1917. The approaches were designed by Michael O’Shaunessay and the leaf was designed by Joseph Strauss who later promoted the Golden Gate Bridge. This moveable bridge has a single section (leaf) that pivots at one end and raised the other to allow boats to pass. Following the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989, the California Department of Transportation accelerated their bridge seismic retrofit funding program. Project Description
The Fourth Street Bridge project limits are from 4th and Berry Street to 4th and Channel Street. During the bridge’s reconstruction, the 300-ton bascule leaf was relocated to a Mission Bay construction yard for over a year, and rehabilitated and returned to the bridge, without disrupting Giants’ games at AT&T Ballpark.
