CITY INCREASES GRAFFITI REWARDS FUND TO CATCH VANDALS
San Francisco, CA- The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that it increased its Graffiti Rewards Fund to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible for vandalizing a freeway sign at Highway 101 at Bayshore and Third streets over the weekend.
The City’s Graffiti Rewards Fund typically offers residents $250 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of graffiti vandals, however, DPW is seeking to provide an added incentive to those who may know who is responsible for this most recent vandalism.
The graffiti damaged sign has been cleaned up at taxpayer expense. The vandalism occurred at the southbound 101 off-ramp at Third & Bayshore during the early morning hours of Sunday, October 18, 2009.
Public Works crews photographed the graffiti and uploaded into the San Francisco Police Department’s new tracking software to aid in the investigation.
“We are doing everything we can to help arrest and prosecute the people responsible for this crime,” said Mohammed Nuru, Deputy Director of Operations and the Department of Public Works. “When people travel to our neighborhoods to damage and degrade them, we have to take appropriate action. I am hopeful that this reward will encourage someone to come forward and provide information.”
It is estimated that San Francisco city agencies spend more than $20 million annually cleaning up graffiti. Several programs have recently begun to engage children, urban artists and the general public in graffiti prevention and cleanup. DPW asks the public to provide information and sign the Graffiti Pledge at zerograffitisf.org.
To apply for the Reward, the public can go to www.sfgov.org/dpw or call 311.
