The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free, confidential and voluntary counseling and information program for City employees, their family members and their significant others. The EAP staff are licensed professionals who provide assessment, brief therapy (up to six sessions), referrals and follow-up for individuals, couples, families and groups regarding personal or work-related issues such as stress; marital, family and relationship problems; anger management; substance abuse; work performance issues; emotional difficulties; or any concern that becomes a problem in one’s life. The EAP staff is also available for mediation/conflict resolution sessions, workplace violence prevention and Critical Incident Debriefing following a traumatic incident.

Note: Effective October 1, 2009 the EAP has a new home!! Per the Mayor's Office mandate, the EAP is one of the "health and wellness" programs that has been consolidated into the Health Service System.

The EAP offers EAP Lunchtime Seminars from 12-1pm. These events are free to City employees. Call the EAP at 1-800-795-2351 to get a schedule.

How EAP Works

Your first appointment with an EAP counselor usually takes place within 48 hours of a phone consult. After a discussion of your concerns, your counselor will help you to identify your issues and make a plan of action to help you resolve your problems. Short-term counseling and referrals may be recommended. All contact with the EAP is voluntary, confidential and free.

Group sessions and workshops are also available at the EAP office or upon request at the worksite. Frequently requested topics include:

  • Communication and Conflict Resolution
  • Anger Management
  • Stress Management
  • Separation and Divorce
  • Balancing Work and Family
  • Dealing with Difficult People

The EAP resource library has books, magazines, videotapes and multi-media training packages on a wide range of personal and work-related topics. The EAP also offers useful information such as directories for finding community agencies, professional services and self-help groups.
