Little League Opening Day 2004
With over 1500 friends, family and fans of Little League Baseball in attendance, Mayor Gavin Newsom, joined by the new Chief of the San Francisco Fire Department, Joanna Hayes-White, helped launch the opening day of the 2004 Little League season at the George R. Moscone Recreation Center in the Marina district. Chief Hayes-White was instrumental in helping the Little League get access to rarely used SFFD land on Treasure Island that they have turned into a playing field. A total of 85 teams (the most ever!) with over 1000 kids ranging in age from six to 18, along with hundreds of adults serving as coaches and umpires, are participating in the program this year. Most of the folks in attendance agreed that the Mayor throws a wicked curve ball!
