Mayor Newsom Launches ChinaSF in ShanghaiAnnounces that Two Major Chinese Companies Plan to Open Operations in San Francisco
11/12/08 - Today San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom joined Vincent H.S. Lo, Chairman of Shui On Land, C. Richard "Dick" Kramlich, General Partner of New Enterprises Associates, and San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting to kick-off a new China-San Francisco economic development initiative called ChinaSF. In addition, Mayor Newsom announced that two major Chinese companies, Trina Solar and China Daily newspaper, plan to open operations in San Francisco.
ChinaSF is a public/private partnership that will help connect businesses in China to the San Francisco Bay Area and assist Chinese companies looking to locate or invest in North America. It is a comprehensive international business recruitment and retention initiative that builds on San Francisco's core strengths for international businesses – a highly desirable urban location, a world-class international airport, an unparalleled workforce, and access to all of the San Francisco Bay Area’s financial and technology resources.
"San Francisco is proud of its long-standing relationship with China," said Mayor Newsom. "ChinaSF builds on this history of shared cultural and economic ties, and strengthens future mutual economic prosperity through enhanced relationships between San Franciscan and Chinese businesses."
Trina Solar, a leading Chinese manufacturer of solar photovoltaic products, will be locating their North American base in San Francisco in 2009. In addition, China Daily, the national English-language newspaper of China, has selected San Francisco as the location for its West Coast Operations Office.
"In the race to become the premiere U.S. gateway for Chinese companies expanding into the North American market, San Francisco has scored another important win with Trina Solar and China Daily," said Mayor Newsom. "Trina Solar’s decision to locate their North American base in San Francisco highlights the City’s strength as a center for clean tech innovation. China Daily’s decision to open its West Coast Operations Office in San Francisco demonstrates that our city is increasingly becoming the center of gravity for Chinese companies, including important media organizations like China Daily."
