04/25/08 - Building on the success and recognition of the Mayor’s Teacher of the Month Program, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced today the first annual Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award. This special leadership recognition is a collaborative effort with the Mayor’s Office, San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), United Administrators of San Francisco, The San Francisco School Alliance, and the generous sponsorship of Comcast.

"On my school visits I have met school leaders – the principals and school directors – who help to create the conditions for quality learning and teaching and who by example lead their staff and students to excellence," said Mayor Newsom. "I have been inspired by these principals who, day-in and day-out, do their best to make a difference in the lives of thousands of students."

A special Blue Ribbon Committee reviewed applications for the award and made recommendations to the Mayor for final selections. Each level of the Pre-K-12 system recognized include: Child Development Centers, Elementary Schools (K-8), Middle Schools and High Schools.

"Comcast is committed to giving back to the communities we serve, and a key element in those communities are the administrators who produce strong schools and strong students," said Doug Schulz, Vice President and General Manager, Comcast. "Comcast is honored to sponsor the inaugural Mayor’s Principal of the Year Award and help salute the local leaders whose guidance allows our students to soar even higher."

The principals chosen as Principal of the Year at each level were honored by Mayor Newsom and SFUSD Deputy Superintendent Tony Smith at McKinley Elementary School.

  • Child Development Centers: Sandra Osborne - Presidio Child Development Center

  • Elementary School (K-8): Bonnie Coffey-Smith - McKinley Elementary School
