Mayor Newsom Announces MUNI Information on Google Transit Website
04/24/08 - Today, Mayor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) officials announced that Muni customers can now plan their trips on public transportation using the Google TransitTM trip planning website. With its global reach as an integrated feature of Google MapsTM and user-friendly features, Google TransitTM offers timely information that helps make public transportation a more viable alternative to driving in San Francisco. "In San Francisco and around the world, we must continue to find creative ways to make public transportation as attractive and accessible as possible," said Mayor Newsom. "This relationship with Google is one of many ongoing improvements to Muni that will enhance our system in the coming years." To plan a trip using Google TransitTM, Muni customers enter an origin and destination address on www.google.com/transit. Step-by-step directions and maps display the estimated schedule for the departure of the Muni next bus or train. Additionally, public transit directions will appear as an alternative to driving directions when a user searches within the Muni service area. "The additional of Muni route and schedule information to Google TransitTM is an exciting milestone for the SFMTA," said Carter Rohan, SFMTA Senior Director of Transportation Planning and Development. "We are committed to providing improved information to our current and potential customers." Google TransitTM includes information from over 50 agencies in 9 countries, including four agencies in the Bay Area. Google MapsTM mapping service is available in 11 languages and is accessible for visually impaired users. Users should visit www.google.com/transit for more information.
