Mayor Gavin Newsom To Send San Francisco-Themed Gifts To Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson

San Francisco’s Businesses Extend Hospitality After Missing Garment Bag Hand-Delivered To Johnson This Morning

10/14/09 - Today Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson recovered his garment bag -- which had gone missing in San Francisco Saturday -- and Mayor Gavin Newsom is also sending along a gift from San Francisco’s business community: a basket brimming with San Francisco-themed treats, including Ghirardelli chocolate, a six pack of Anchor Steam Beer, and tickets to a San Francisco 49ers game.

"We want to encourage Mayor Johnson to come back and visit San Francisco soon, so we’re extending the warm hand of hospitality," said Newsom. "When San Francisco’s business community heard about Mayor Johnson’s misfortune, they stepped up to the plate and donated gifts as an invitation to return to our city."

Johnson’s garment bag went missing on Saturday near Union Square. Newsom aides recovered the garment bag from a Good Samaritan in the Tenderloin yesterday, and friends of Newsom hand-delivered it to Johnson’s office in Sacramento this morning.

Items in the gift basket include:

  • San Francisco 49ers tickets
  • Six pack of Anchor Steam beer
  • Dinner at the Balboa Cafe
  • Tickets to Beach Blanket Babylon
  • Sourdough bread from Boudin
  • Bottle of Cade wine
  • Coffee from Caffe Trieste
  • Golden Gate Bridge: History and Design of an Icon (book)
  • City Lights Pocket Poets Anthology
  • Two-night stay at the Fairmont Hotel
  • Ghirardelli chocolate
  • Baseball autographed by Tim Lincecum
  • Precita Eyes Muralists: Street Art San Francisco (book)
  • Organic agave nectar and all-natural margarita mix from Tres Agaves
  • A necktie from Wilkes Bashford
  • Tickets to the Wax Museum at Fisherman’s Wharf
  • Dinner Cruise aboard Hornblower Yacht from the Convention and Visitors Bureau

Newsom also noted that San Francisco was voted as "Best U.S. City" by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, and emphasized that crime rates are down overall in San Francisco from last year, with homicides down 55%, robbery down 17%, and car theft down 15%.
