Mayor Newsom and SFMTA Announce Record MUNI Annual On-Time Performance09/01/09 - Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) today announced that the Municipal Railway (Muni) achieved the highest ever annual on-time performance (OTP) rate—73.3 percent—for Fiscal Year (FY) 2009, which ended June 30, 2009. This record OTP rate for FY 2009 represents a 2.7 percent gain from the FY 2008 rate of 70.6 percent. The voter-mandated OTP goal is 85 percent.
"Muni is the transportation thread that binds the City together," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. "We still have a long way to go, but we are making significant improvements to Muni’s reliability."
"Improving Muni’s on-time performance is a fundamental mission of the SFMTA," said Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., SFMTA Executive Director/CEO. "We will continue to use all available tools to provide the highest possible quality of safe and reliable service to all of our transportation customers."
The OTP for the fourth quarter of FY 2009 was 74.4 percent, which is close to the 74.5 percent OTP of the third quarter of FY 2009—the highest quarterly OTP since Proposition E was approved by voters in 1999.
The efforts that led to the record third quarter OTP have continued to drive improvements at Muni. Implementing monthly monitoring of key performance indicators has provided vital data to shape Muni’s reliability initiatives. Interdisciplinary OTP teams are using this data to focus on the reliability of the heaviest used routes and lines and ultimately to address every route and line. More accurate Muni schedules, increased Operator hiring, improved maintenance, better congestion management and enhanced service delivery supervision have also contributed to the record OTP. These efforts will continue as SFMTA works to achieve the 85 percent goal.
