Mayor Newsom Announces Addition of Kaiser Permanente to San Francisco's Universal Healthcare Program
Newsom also announces that Healthy San Francisco now has over 40,000 San Franciscans enrolled in the program 06/03/09 - Mayor Gavin Newsom announced today that on July 1, 2009, the Healthy San Francisco provider network will expand to include Kaiser Permanente as a provider of care to the uninsured. "From the beginning, Healthy San Francisco has been a partnership of the public and private sectors," said Newsom. "And at every step, Kaiser Permanente has been a valuable partner in the City’s efforts to develop the Healthy San Francisco program." Newsom also thanked Kaiser for being a member of his Universal Healthcare Council, funding the initial actuarial analysis for the program and for having a Kaiser representative sit on the Healthy San Francisco Advisory Committee. Healthy San Francisco provides accessible and affordable health care services to uninsured adult residents, regardless of a person’s employment status, immigration status or pre-existing medical condition. Residents with income at or below 500% of the Federal Poverty Level (for one person $54,150; for a family of four $110,250) are eligible to enroll into the program. Over 41,000 uninsured residents are currently enrolled in the program. This is over two-thirds of the estimated 60,000 uninsured adult residents. As a provider in the Healthy San Francisco network, Kaiser will provide primary, emergency, specialty, diagnostic, pharmacy and inpatient services. "Kaiser Permanente is here to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve," said Christine Robisch, Senior Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente’s San Francisco Area. "We are excited about this opportunity to partner with the city in its landmark Healthy San Francisco program. As California’s largest health-care provider, we know first hand that providing access to health care and giving people a medical home is a major step in improving people’s health." "Healthy San Francisco debuted almost two years ago on July 2, 2007, and in that time, the program has expanded both its income eligibility and provider network twice," said Director of Public Health Dr. Mitch Katz. "I’m grateful for Kaiser Permanente’s partnership in this effort and for acting on the shared responsibility that all providers have to improve access to care for the uninsured." Healthy San Francisco is administered by the San Francisco Department of Public Health in partnership with the San Francisco Health Plan. More information on the program is available at www.healthysanfrancisco.org or by calling 3-1-1. "Having Kaiser Permanente as an integral part of Healthy San Francisco is a crucial expansion in the City's on-going effort to provide health care for all San Franciscans," said Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, who collaborated with Newsom to create the program. |
