2nd Quarter 2009 (March - April)

Mayor Releases Rainy Day Funds - Mayor announced that layoffs and program cuts to public schools will be prevented by providing $11 million from the city's rainy day fund. Newsom’s action will save 130 teachers’ jobs.

WE Connect Campaign - Maria Shriver’s WE Connect campaign is a pioneering public/private partnership designed to help California’s working families become more financially secure by connecting them to important programs and resources.

Jump Start Day at Civic Center - April 17th - On April 17 from 10:00 until 12:30 pm, join 675 preschool children, their families, and service providers in Civic Center Plaza to celebrate the importance of early care and education in SF.

Energy-Efficient Streetlights are Installed - Mayor Gavin Newsom announces the deployment of the first fifty City-owned LED (light-emitting diode) streetlight fixtures in the Tenderloin and announced a new partnership between Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to evaluate new "smart controller" technologies that will allow for better monitoring and performance of City streetlights.

1st Quarter 2009 (January - March)

Family Summer Resource Fair on March 14, 2009 - A free showcase of summer activities features 200 Exhibitors presenting camps and programs for children, youth jobs, and community resources. Fun at the Fair includes a climbing wall, jump house, and free massages. Free roundtrip shuttle from 8th & Mission and Third & Palou.

Pfizer to Provide Drugs for Healthy SF - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that Pfizer will provide free medicines through Pfizer’s Sharing the Care program for San Francisco’s first-of-its-kind universal health care program, Healthy San Francisco.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Unveiled - Mayor Newsom Unveils Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations for San Francisco. Announces partnership with car sharing organizations to make plug-in cars available to the public

Newsom Secures Wage Concessions From Nurses - Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the first wage concession agreement this year by a City labor union.

Mayor to Make Seismic Safety Mandatory - Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he has directed the Department of Building Inspection to craft specific legislation requiring mandatory upgrades to San Francisco’s soft-story wood frame buildings.

Volunteer to Clean Community on February 7, 2009 - Join the Community Clean Team to volunteer on Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 9 am to 12 noon at Brotherhood Way & Arch. Volunteers will work on landscaping projects, paint out graffiti, abate litter, and plant trees.

New Sidewalk Landscape Permit from SFDPW - The Department of Public Works - Bureau of Urban Forestry is now accepting permits for sidewalk landscaping. In addition to planting trees, this permit allows property owners to convert a portion of the sidewalk in front of their property into an attractive landscaped area.
