Department on the Status of Women

Health

The Convention to Eliminate all forms of Descrimination Against Women (CEDAW) states that all women have the right to adequate healthcare.  The Commission and Department take this principle very seriously, and attempt to address the disparities that exist in the following areas:

African American Women's Breast Health
Though African American women contract breast cancer at about the same rate as the general population, the breast cancer mortality rate for these women is significantly higher.  The Department collaborates with several community partners in addressing this disparity, including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, SF Bay Area and the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health

Universal Healthcare
Department staff and Commissioners participate in a number of working groups aimed at creating a universal healthcare system, and we participated in the task force instrumental in creating the landmarkHealthy San Francisco program.
