A certified copy of a Public Marriage License is not available until 4-6 weeks and a Confidential Marriage License is not available until 10 days, AFTER the license is received from the person solemnizing the marriage. For public marriage licenses, the marriage license is returned to the Assessor-Recorder's Office. For confidential marriage licenses, the marriage license is returned to the County Clerk's Office. If your marriage ceremony is arranged through our office to be performed by one of our Deputy Marriage Commissioners, the marriage license is submitted to the proper agency by the following business day. The County Clerk's office does not handle certified copies of public marriage licenses. Certified copies of public marriage licenses are handled by: Office of The Assessor-Recorder The County Clerk's office handles certified copies of Confidential marriage licenses and they can only be ordered in person or by mail from the office if payment is made by cash, a California pre-printed check including name and address, or money order payable to the S.F. County Clerk. (Include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope). Only copies of licenses purchased in San Francisco are available. The office will need the full maiden names for both spouses and the date of the marriage in order to process your request. If ordering in person, you must present a legal picture I.D. or if ordering by mail, you must send the original request form or a written request by one of the spouses, with the signature notarized. A non-refundable $13.00 fee will be charged to search your marriage record. If found, a certified copy of the license will be provided. Additional certified copies are $13.00 each. Processing time for orders in person is approximately 20 minutes. Processing time for orders by mail is approximately one week.
