MINUTES OF THE

SOUTHEAST COMMUNITY FACILITY COMMISSION

MEETING THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2009 – 6:00 PM

ALEX L. PITCHER, JR. COMMUNITY ROOM,1800 OAKDALE AVENUE

1.0     CALL TO ORDER 

 

Commissioner Kenneth Sampson called the Wednesday, March 25, 2009 meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. in the Alex L. Pitcher Community Room at 1800 Oakdale Avenue.   Commissioner Kennedy read the Sunshine Ordinance.

1.2      CONSENT CALENDAR

 

Commissioner Kenneth Sampson announced the Consent Calendar.

 

Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary requested the minutes of the Wednesday, February 25 and Thursday, March 12, 2009 Commission meeting be forwarded.

 

2.0      PUBLIC COMMENT

 

Sam Murray, SFPUC Communications Manager provided a report on the Digester Project and suggested setting up a tour for the Commissioners.

 

Mr. Murray said the paperwork was completed for the funding of the Health Fair.

 

Mr. Murray suggested Commissioner Yang and Greg Mayer meet to discuss a tour of the facility, which could also include the other Commissioners if they were interested in seeing the plant.

 

In closing, Mr. Murray said a new fence was constructed next to the child care center, but was not up to par so it would be reconstructed.

 

Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary, acknowledged the arrival of Commissioner Brown, who thanked Commissioner Sampson for starting the meeting and took over as Chair in the absence of Commissioner Kennedy. 

           

3.0            COMMUNICATIONS

 

Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary announced the following:

      

a)      Thank You Letter to Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi for securing funding for Aids/HIV work.

b)      Thank You Letter to Mayor Newsom applauding the release of $23 million for San Francisco teachers.

c)      Updated Health Fair Program

 

4.0           PRESENTATION

 

None.

 

5.0     REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

 

None.

 

6.0     HEALTH AND HOUSING AD-HOC COMMITTEE REPORT

 

Commissioner Churchwell updated the Commission on the Health Fair scheduled for April 4, 2009.  He advised all plans were on schedule and encouraged the Commissioners to attend in support of the event.

 

Sam Murray announced entertainment would be provided by the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Academy.  He said having the schools participate in this manner would ensure more attendance of students.

 

Mr. Murray informed the Commission that outreach had been provided by Dr. Moses and the Health and Housing Ad-Hoc Committee members, who visited school principals who were not available to attend the scheduled meeting.

Sam Murray announced Cathrine Sneed of the SF Sheriff’s Garden Project would be available to provide lunch.

 

Dr. Moses announced Sophie Maxwell would be the keynote speaker and although the Mayor was not available to attend he would be sending a representative to provide awards to the children.

 

Dr. Moses thanked Commissioner Churchwell for stepping in the chairing the Health and Housing Ad-Hoc Committee in Commissioner Jones’ absence.

 

7.0              STAFF REPORT

 

Executive Director Toye Moses provided the following report:

 

1.  The Community Challenge Grant is due on Friday, April 3.  The Director advised he was working closely with Heidi Hardin, of Think Round, Inc. along with Commissioner Kennedy.  He advised they were requesting $10,000 for the mural and this was the third request.

 

2.  The requisition for the replacement of the 1842 position is pending in the Mayor’s office.

 

3.  The plans for the retreat are on-going.  A meeting is planned with the facilitator and PUC managers, who are providing funding for the retreat and the facilitator.  The retreat is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 16, from 9am to 4pm.

 

4.  There was an incident at an event last week.  Alcohol was served, the event planner said there would be 50 attendees.  There were 150 attendees, during a routine police search weapons were found.  After the police called for backup the guns disappeared and were later found in shrubs in the parking lot.  A police report was filed and there was discussion with Homeland Security.  The monitors assigned reported they were not aware of the incident, subsequently they have been suspended.  Dr. Moses will meet with Commissioner Kennedy and set a time for a Facilities Committee meeting.  The police report was provided to the Commissioners for their perusal.

 

8.0     NEW AND ON-GOING BUSINESS

9.0     INTRODUCTION OF NEW BUSINESS BY COMMISSIONERS

 

        None.

 

10      PUBLIC COMMENT

 

None.

 

11      ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Carla Vaughn, Commission Secretary announced Mr. David Chiu, President of the Board of Supervisors will present at the Commission meeting scheduled for April 22, 2009.

 

Dr. Moses announced SFPUC will have their Commission meeting in the Alex Pitcher Room in June.
